Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Christopher Tufton, on Monday reported that three people have died and 13 others were injured while preparing for Hurricane Melissa.

The deaths occurred in Hanover, St Catherine, and St Elizabeth.

In St Elizabeth, a healthcare worker was killed after a tree fell on him.

"We understand the need to prepare but we urge extreme caution in that preparation. If you need help, call for help," Tufton said.

Most injuries were linked to persons falling from ladders or rooftops while making storm preparations, the minister said.

Jamaicans are being to prioritise safety and exercise extreme vigilance in and around their homes and communities.

Members of the public are also urged to exercise caution when using stairs and accessing rooftops.

Persons are especially encouraged to wear appropriate safety gear, if roofs and other structures must be accessed -- including non-skid shoes and closed-toe footwear, to protect against slips, skids and injuries from hidden debris or foreign objects.

Persons are also urged to stay clear of downed and/or exposed power lines.

The Ministry is urging Jamaicans to remain indoors where possible, follow official advisories, and look out for vulnerable members of communities, including children, pregnant women, older adults, and the disabled.
