MoBay United’s Fletcher shooting for return to national team
Last year's semi-finalists Montego Bay United FC (MBU) came into this Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season rejuvenated. With a stellar performance to run Racing United FC out of the park on Sunday night, leading goalscorer Jourdain Fletcher said his start to this season is significant as it is by far his best.
A brace from a recharged Fletcher helped MBU carve out a 3-1 win over Racing United at Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall, St James.
"This is my best season because I started from scratch, unlike previous seasons. Last season and the year before, I came back in January or later on," the striker pointed out.
Noting that he wants to be the leading goalscorer for the season, Fletcher said, "I know I can do it and I can get my 25 goals or more."
Fletcher, who is on seven goals, said he remained focused on achieving personal goals.
"I want to be picked in the World Cup squad, so I am working very hard. I also have a great aim on getting a good contract," said Fletcher, who scored two goals in eight appearances for the Reggae Boyz.
The 28-year-old recent Cornwall College star has played professionally in India (Gokulam Kerala FC and NEROCA FC) and Albania (KF Skenderbeu Korce).
Sunday's loss he helped inflict was Racing United's first in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) this season.
The Xavier Gilbert-coached MBU created confusion in Racing's defence to capitalise and open the scoring. After high-intensity play from MoBay United, Racing United's Jimoy Jones paid dearly for an own goal in the 30th minute.
Soon after, Fletcher's shot found the perfect spot to beat Racing United's goalkeeper, Aaron Enill, in the 33rd minute, and then he stepped up his game a notch to complete his brace in the 43rd minute.
Jones, after giving up a goal, corrected his error in the 51st minute to give Racing United some hope.
MoBay were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute, presenting Fletcher with his chance for a hat-trick. However, he got the ball in the net, but the goal was waved off by the referee for a double kick on the penalty.
With this win, MBU stayed atop the table on 22 points after seven wins, one draw, and one loss, while Racing remained on 15 points, acquired through four wins, three draws, and one loss.
MoBay United's assistant coach, Dillon Thelwell, said the team's positive performance highlights their understanding of the need to secure three points.
"We created so many chances in the first 15 to 17 minutes in which we didn't concede a goal," he observed, noting their high intensity.
"I think we let them back in the game to score a goal, but the guys managed the game to prevent them from scoring more."
Anthony Patrick, head coach of Racing United, said his team struggled after conceding the goals.
"In the first 15 minutes, we looked like we wanted to play, but after the own goal, it dampened our spirits," said Patrick.
"We made some adjustments in the last five minutes in the first half and in the whole second half," he added. "It paid a little dividend to give us one goal, but it was not enough. We just have to keep working."
When the JPL resumes on Sunday, MoBay United will face defending champions Cavalier SC at Sabina Park, and Racing United will match up against Molynes United FC.
